Task Dependencies

A task dependency means that one task cannot begin or finish before another task is completed. Establishing dependencies helps visualize the project's critical path and helps ensure that tasks are performed in the correct sequence. By understanding dependencies, project managers can better plan timelines and resource allocation.

Creating Task Dependencies

There are a couple of different ways you can create task dependencies within your project:

  • Using the Gantt Chart: The Gantt chart provides a visual way to create dependencies. By hovering over the end of a task bar, you can drag a line to the start of another task, creating a dependency. With the system you can create multiple dependencies from a single task, and all of them will be shown on the task card.
  • Using the Task Card: Within each task card, you'll find a dedicated "Dependencies" section to create and manage these connections. Here's how it works:
    • You can browse through all available tasks within the project.
    • When creating a new dependency, you have to select a task and specify its relationship to the current task, choosing either "Finishes after" or "Finishes before".
    • Once a dependency is created, you can access a context menu next to the dependent task to block the relationship. In this context menu, you can select to "Block", which will transform the dependency into a "Blocking dependency".

    Blocking Dependencies

    • How to Create:
      • To create a blocking dependency from the Gantt Chart, single-click on an existing dependency line and select "Blocking Dependency."
      • To create a blocking dependency from the Task Card, access the context menu next to the desired dependency and select "Block" .
    • Impact: A blocking dependency will prevent the subsequent task from being moved to "Done" status until its prerequisite task is completed. A lock icon will appear on the dependent task, indicating that it cannot be finished.

      Removing Dependencies

Dependencies can be removed at any time:

      • Remove in Gantt Chart: Click the dependency arrow and select "Remove Dependency".
      • Remove in Task Card: Within the task card, access the context menu next to the dependency you wish to remove, and select "Delete".
